Another important point that must noticed is the presence in Alsace of a major jewish community. By his imperial edict
of 1808, Napoléon forced them to choose a hereditary family name in order to register their certificates in the French civil
records. This obligation generated the creation of cross-reference lists of old and new family names. The most interesting
documents of this religion are marriage settlements, even if they are written in hebrew. Since 1701, these records had to
be deposited by the Royal notarial offices. A census was made in 1784 as a counting of jewish prople who settled in Alsace.
It is of greatest interest for genealogical research.
